The Hidden World of Pearl Farming: From Mollusk to Jewelry

When you admire a shimmering freshwater pearl necklace, it’s easy to forget the journey it took—from river or lake mussel to the elegant piece around someone’s neck. At STELLA MARGARITA, we believe understanding this journey not only deepens appreciation, but also showcases the care, sustainability, and artistry behind every piece.

Freshwater pearl farming begins with selecting healthy mussels, often species like Hyriopsis cumingii or Cristaria plicata. The environment is carefully chosen—clean water, ideal temperature, sufficient nutrients, stable pH levels, and protection from extreme weather. Once mussels reach maturity, tiny grafts of mantle tissue are inserted into their mantles (sometimes many grafts per mussel), which triggers the formation of a pearl sac. From there, the mussel secretes nacre—the iridescent layers that eventually build up to become the pearl.

Over the next 2–5 years, the pearls slowly grow. During this period, farmers monitor water quality and protect mussels from predators or illness. Harvesting takes place when pearls reach desired size, shape, and luster. After removal, the pearls are cleaned, sorted by attributes like size, shape, surface and color, and sometimes polished to enhance their glow. Only a fraction of all pearls grown make it to “jewelry-grade” status—those with outstanding luster, low blemishes, and pleasing shapes.

Sustainability plays a central role. Freshwater pearl farms that care for their ecosystems help ensure healthy mussels and clean water not just for today but for future glimmers. Ethical farms avoid overharvesting or damaging habitats, and many reuse mussels for multiple cultivation cycles. This vigilance means that each pearl isn’t just beautiful—it’s produced with respect and responsibility.

By knowing how pearls are sourced, grown, graded, and transformed, you can see beyond beauty—you see story, labor, and nature’s cooperation.
